Watertown, Mass.-based Ionics Inc. provides ultrafiltration (UF) systems for a range of municipal applications such as surface water treatment for the production of potable water. Other applications include pretreatment for seawater RO systems and water reuse. The systems utilize hollow fiber UF membranes. There are two modes of operation—a production mode where feed is forced through fibers to make product, and a backwash mode where some filtrate is forced back through the membranes to remove any solids.
