Strickland Produce, of Nashville, Tenn., has begun sanitizing vegetables with ozonated water, becoming the first fresh-cut, produce company to harness this new technology designed to provide consumers with longer-lasting lettuce. By using Minnetonka, Minn.-based Osmonics’ ozone technology to rinse the salad ingredients, Strickland reduces surface bacteria that can cause vegetables to spoil prematurely. Ozonated water can be recycled and creates no by-product so vegetables retain their true flavor.
