The American Water Works Association offers a new publication, Biodegradable Organic Matter in Drinking Water Treatment and Distribution. BOM is found in all surface waters and poses a serious problem when found in a potable water supply. It can lead to bacterial regrowth and reacts with chlorine and other disinfectants causing taste and odor complaints, as well as the potential for illness. The AWWA publication features nearly 300 pages of research, case studies and other useful information on the characteristics of BOM, measurement techniques, treatment options and how to maintain a BOM-free distribution system. The book is available to both AWWA members and nonmembers.
