The caking-up of tunnel water drainage systems leads to considerable maintenance costs. On top of taking the necessary precautions during construction and implementing conventional countermeasures such as high-pressure flushing or even milling-out of the drainage pipes, the use of slow-release chemical auxiliaries is becoming an increasingly popular method to combat this caking effect.
