John Guest: A 60-Year History of Quality, Technology and Innovation

By Ted Antony

John Guest, a brand within the Reliance Worldwide Corporation’s (RWC) portfolio, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2021. Today, John Guest has more than one billion fittings in use around the world, making it the leader in OEM plastic push-fit fittings in the fluid control industry. And while this is an extraordinary milestone, from the very beginning John Guest was built on a culture of excellence.

Prioritizing quality
John Guest got its start in 1961 as a precision engineering and tool-making enterprise and opened its first factory in England. Founder John Guest himself was determined to keep product quality and service as the cornerstones of the brand’s culture—facets that remain in place today. And even as the brand’s market share has grown, its parent company has maintained strict control over engineering and manufacturing processes, ensuring its well-known and high-quality products continue to be produced to OEM and installer expectations.

Because John Guest products are designed, manufactured and tested in-house, RWC has greater control over every product from the production line, while also being able to respond quickly to customer ideas and market trends. It has even designed and created its own automated assembly equipment to tailor the manufacturing process to its customers’ needs.

Creating industry firsts
Along with quality, RWC has continued the brand’s commitment to a culture of innovation with an emphasis on technology. In 1974, John Guest developed the first push-in tube connector for use with compressed air, which would lead to the introduction of push-fit solutions for fluid control systems and other applications for which the brand is now known. The technology was revolutionary, the first of its kind to require no special tools and creating a significantly quicker install.

Establishing a global presence
By 1983, John Guest opened its first overseas sales division in France. Today, it holds a global presence with product shipped worldwide to be used in beverage dispensing, water purification, appliance, car wash, healthcare, agriculture and more. Because of its vertical supply chain and global presence, RWC can often supply customers with John Guest products quickly, creating a competitive advantage for the brand and its customers.

With 60 years of maintaining customer satisfaction and providing high-quality solutions, John Guest preserves its legacy of anticipating the industry’s future and providing solutions professionals can stake their reputations on.
