Long-time water industry veteran Orville L. Schaefer, 86, died May 9 at his residence in Perryville, MO. Born November 23, 1930 in Uniontown, MO to Herman Benjamin and T. Onita (Popp) Schaefer, he graduated from PHS class of 1949 and from University of Missouri-Rolla in 1958. Schaefer was also a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. In his water industry career, he was the owner and operator of Schaefer Water Centers. A long-time member of WQA’s former Education Committee, Schaefer was the author of the Making Water Safe manual and was a strong advocate of WQA’s Professional Certification Program. He was the recipient of several WQA Leadership Awards, including the Award of Merit in 1986, the Key Award in 2001 and the Ray Cross Award in 2010. Schaefer is survived by his wife, Laverne; four sons, Stephen (Nancy); Michael (Andrea); Thomas (JoAnn) and Robert ; one daughter, Carol (Lynn) Winter; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Dawn; one sister, Irene Hagerty and one great-grandson, David Schaefer. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Family and Childrens’ Services, Saxony Lutheran High School or Serenity Hospice.
