PWQA scholarship winners announced

Johan Eide, a graduating senior at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa, CA, was honored recently with the PWQA 2013 Major of Study Related to Potable Water Quality Scholarship. He has plans to attend Cal Poly, SLO in the fall and major in bio resource and agricultural engineering. For his high school senior project Eide and his best friend Simon Bell set out to plan, fundraise and build a soccer field for Redwood Covenant Church in Santa Rosa. After meeting with several Sonoma County companies, they arranged to have a well dug at cost and the above-ground portion donated. The pair designed a high-tech weather self-adjusting irrigation system, which has the ability to send email or text notification of sprinkler breaks or pipe bursts. They installed a bio swale on an extra section of land to fulfill the needs in dirt for grading and in an effort to sink, spread and slow drainage water from the field into the ground. Yosuke Yamada, a graduate student at Cal State Northridge majoring in environmental and occupational health, received the Member Company Sponsorship award. He started working at Puroserve Water Systems, building, installing and servicing the company’s RO systems as an unpaid intern fulfilling a curriculum requirement for his graduate studies. Puroserve management reported that Yamada is a very motivated and capable individual who loves to learn, is always the first to volunteer for any job and is an excellent employee who sets a great example for others. His interest in water quality as it relates to public health is borne mostly from his first-hand view of air and water pollution in his native Japan. Yamada received his Master’s Degree in May and looks forward to a career in the water quality side of the public-health field.
