Carbon Enterprises, Inc. (CEI) announced it has purchased an anthracite facility in Hazeleton, PA. The purchase will directly benefit clients with more quality control and additional cost savings. Several upgrades are planned for the anthracite manufacturing plant in the near future, in order to make the company and its processes more efficient. CEI also announced its social media presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+ to facilitate more communication with its customers.

Emerson Process Management has been recognized with the Frost & Sullivan 2012 US Product Line Strategy Award in the water and wastewater analytical instrumentation market. A panel of analysts noted that Emerson’s wide range of product offerings exemplifies the company’s foresight and innovation in addressing customer needs.


North America

Arizona may defer salinity legislation until 2014

Focusing on voluntary limits, the head of the Arizona Salinity Committee suggested in November that legislative solutions may not be attempted in the upcoming 2013 session. Representative Karen Fann, who spearheaded the creation of the committee, said she will only run a bill if there is a good product that has been vetted by all stakeholders and has enough support to have a 90-percent chance of passing. Otherwise, a bill should not be introduced until 2014, she said. These developments came at a meeting of the the Technical Advisory Subcommittee of the committee.

WQA warning issued about FAIRGuide

WQA members may have recently received a letter from FAIRGuide, or Construct Data, its publisher, asking them to sign on to an exhibitors directory. The letter mentions the WQA Aquatech USA show in a couple of places and states the company is trying to update members’ preregistered listings. AquaPerfect acquired by Waterlogic

Waterlogic Plc has agreed to acquire the trading assets of northern Californiabased AquaPerfect LLC, a vendor of Waterlogic water dispensers and Keurig coffee machines. AquaPerfect has an existing installed base of over 2,300 water dispensers and coffee machines supplying and servicing offices and businesses in the Sacramento area. Following completion, the AquaPerfect business will become part of Taylor Made Water Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Waterlogic USA.

UL wins US EPA contract

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has won a contract from US EPA to test samples from small public water systems serving 10,000 people or fewer for contaminants listed in the third cycle of the agency’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3) program. UL has been approved by US EPA to perform all methods required for UCMR 3 List 1 and List 2 contaminants. Over the past 20 years, the company has analyzed more than 2.5 million water samples for thousands of bottlers, public water systems, engineering firms and state and federal agencies, such as US EPA and the military. UL is also accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for delivering the widest range of testing and certification services for water product manufacturers.

Calgon Carbon repurchase plan outlined

The Calgon Carbon Corporation announced it has entered into an accelerated share repurchase (ASR) agreement with Morgan Stanley & Co., LLC to repurchase an aggregate $50 million (USD) of the company’s stock. Under the agreement, Calgon Carbon will receive approximately 3.3 million shares at the inception of the ASR. The total number of shares ultimately repurchased under the agreement will be determined upon final settlement. The company anticipates that all repurchases under the ASR will be completed no later than the third quarter of 2013. The ASR will be funded through the company’s US revolving credit facility. As of September 30, 2012, the company had approximately $118 million available under its existing US line of credit.

First flowmeter for pool/spa applications certifed by NSF

NSF International has certified Fluidics of Hawaii, LLC’s FV-C Mechanical Flow Meter for pool, spa and waterpark applications, to the American National Standard for recreational water equipment and new California regulations. The company is the first to earn NSF certification to this standard, demonstrating to pool operators and regulators its ability to effectively and accurately measure water flow critical to disinfection, filtration and maintaining safe water circulation rates. Verifying the safety and effectiveness of flowmeters is especially important to maintaining water flowrates within safe limits (as defined by law in the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act), which helps prevent entrapment from pool and spa drains.

IBWA award winners named

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) announced several award winners at its annual conference. The organization presented its 2012 Supplier of the Year Award to GoodPac Plastics headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Simon Cox, The Water Guy of Birdsboro, PA, received Route Salesperson of the Year honors. The Environmental Sustainability Award was presented to Pure Flo Water Company, Santee, CA, and 2012 Beverage World Bottled Water Hall of Fame honors were bestowed on Stewart E. Allen, Special Advisor to the Board, DS Waters, Atlanta, GA.

WAHC™ delivers on WaterWisdom

The ninth World Aquatic Health™ Conference (WAHC™) and Aquatic Physical Therapy Summit was held for the first time in Norfolk, VA, and organizers report a strong attendance of 412 attendees, holding close to last year’s record-setting event in Seattle, WA. Pool/spa conference a big success

Attendees and exhibitors filled the Morial Convention Center with energy and excitement during the recent 2012 Int’l Pool | Spa | Patio Expo. Taking place in New Orleans, LA for the first time since 2003, the show was held November 6-8, with the educational conference taking place November 2-8. Total attendance was 10,202, a five-percent increase over the previous year, marking the third year in a row for an increase in total attendance. Attendees represented all segments of the industry, including pool/spa builders, retailers, service companies, designers and landscape architects.

Finnish company executive license granted

The KWH Pipe Ltd. Group of Vaasa, Finland and Armco Staco SA Industria Metalurgica of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil have announced the granting by KWH Pipe to Armco Staco of an exclusive license for the manufacture and marketing of Weholite Pipe in Brazil. The Weholite product line, invented by KWH Pipe in the 1980s, consists of high-density polyethylene pipe, fittings and fabricated assemblies.

H2O award for Aquatech

Aquatech has received the H2O Water Award in the Best Waste Water Project category. H2O Water Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) water industry and recognize projects, programs, as well as products and solutions that have contributed to the advancement of the region’s water industry. The awards program is organized by CPI Sustainability, a part of Dubai-based Corporate Publishing International (CPI). Aquatech received the award for its work with EQUATE Petrochemical Company in Kuwait.
