Pentair reported third-quarter sales up 17 percent year-over-year to $774 million (USD), with double-digit growth in both the Water and Technical Products divisions. Residential flow sales were up one percent, while filtration sales were up nine percent. Within the Water division, US sales grew 14 percent, led by strong sales in municipal pumps, pool equipment and agriculture. In emerging markets, water grew 13 percent, led by 18-percent growth in Latin America and sales almost doubling in India. Waterite Technologies, Inc. has reached an agreement to purchase all outstanding shares of West Heat Industries, Ltd., a Canadian national distributor of water bottles, caps, water coolers and water dispensing accessories and general water treatment products, for an undisclosed sum. West Heat’s electrical and radiant heat product lines were not included in the agreement; the company will remain a standalone division of Waterite and continue its operations at the current Winnipeg location.

NSF International has been honored with the Washtenaw County (MI) Water Resource Commissioner’s Office and Environmental Health Division 2010 Washtenaw County Environmental Excellence Award. The award program recognizes businesses and non-profit organizations that have implemented environmentally sound practices in the areas of water quality protection, waste reduction, recycling and pollution prevention.

NSF announced two new certifications: Aquatherm’s passive solar radiant collectors (the first solar heating product for use in recreational water applications) met the requirements of NSF/ANSI Standard 50, and Zurn Pex’s fire sprinkler piping system met NSF’s requirements for multi-purpose piping as identified in the International Residential Code (IRC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard. The company’s pipe and fittings comply with NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components-Health Effects and NSF/ANSI Standard 14: Plastic Piping System Components as well as other standards for residential use.

Arsenic mystery solved

Scientists have solved an important mystery about why an arsenic compound, called arsenite, can kill us, and yet function as an effective therapeutic agent against disease and infections. According to new research published in the October issue of GENETICS, scientists from Johns Hopkins, Baylor and Stanford discovered that arsenite (a common water contaminant in many parts of the world) affects a special protein-folding machine in yeast, called TCP, also present in humans. This information not only opens the doors to developing safer therapeutic alternatives to arsenite-based medicines, but it may allow researchers a means to counter the negative effects of arsenite poisoning.

WaterSmart a hit in Las Vegas

More than 1,000 participants from 40 states and 10 foreign nations took part in the third annual WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition in in Las Vegas, NV, Oct. 6-8. Presented by the Southern Nevada Water Authority in partnership with US EPA’s WaterSense Program, AWWA and other forward- thinking organizations, WSI offered more than 130 professional sessions in a variety of tracks, and an expo hall featuring nearly 90 exhibitors from around the world. Building code changes for Ontario, Canada

Canadian WQA announced Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has begun work on development of the next edition of the Building Code in anticipation of filing by the Registrar of Regulations by mid 2011. Public consultations will play a key role in development of the code; the Ministry is seeking industry’s views on potential changes that might be included in the next edition. Bottling facility to be auctioned

MIOX system installed in VI

MIOX Corporation was selected by Virgin Islands Water & Power Authority to supply a prefabricated, packaged on-site, mixed-oxidant disinfection system for the final disinfection phase at the Richmond Water Distribution Facility on the Island of St. Croix. The system will include three Vault™ Series mixed-oxidant generators, each with 60-pound-per-day (27.2-kilo-per-day) capacity, and will treat three million gpd (11.3 million L/d) of desalinated water. Expected to be completed by late 2010, the system will replace the facility’s aging calcium hypochlorite system.

Aqua-Chem subsidiary awarded Russian contract

MATRIX, a division of Aqua-Chem, Inc., was awarded the Russian Central Government’s final order for one of the largest seawater membrane systems ever installed within the federation. The company is a leader in providing micro-utility infrastructure, including state-of-the-art RO systems for marine and land-based applications around the world.

HaloSource IPO in Europe

Global Water Intelligence reported that Seattle, WA-based HaloSource intends to float on London’s Alternative Investment Market to raise £50 million (79.6 million USD) of fresh equity to support its expansion plans and build new manufacturing plants. The company, which generated $11.8 million (USD) in revenues in 2009, has forecasted top-line growth of 40 to 50 percent this year, driven primarily by its POE water purification products. Liberum Capital is acting as nominated adviser.

Severn Trent to upgrade Spanish system

Severn Trent Services–Apliclor in Spain has designed and supplied new filtration and disinfection equipment for the Cadalso de los Vidrios drinking water treatment station. The upgraded facility, which came into operation in August, serves the needs of some 3,000 inhabitants in the Community of Madrid. The total treatment scheme represents an investment of almost €160,000 ($220,450 USD).

UNESCO desertification conference held

In November, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev hosted the Third Annual International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification: The Route to Restoration. More than 500 people from 50 countries including more than 20 presenters from American universities and US government agencies attended. The event, organized by BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research (BIDR) in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), highlighted BGU’s and Israel’s role as a leader in this critical field.
