The growing marketplace for bottled water has become a hot button issue throughout the United Kingdom as a variety of consumer interest groups have latched onto the industry as environmentally un-friendly. Friends of the Earth and the Food Commission have called it “environmental madness” to transport vast quantities of water into the country, a waste of fossil fuels, when tap water in the UK has been judged amongst the cleanest in the world. A representative for Waitrose supermarket chain, which stocks the popular Fiji Water, said the brand is never shipped over (to the U.K.) on its own and therefore required no excessive fuel for transport.
