Ferric iron

« Back to Glossary Index

The cause of ?rusty? water, this type of iron consists of small, solid particles containing trivalent iron, usually as gelatinous ferric hydroxide or ferric oxide (Fe2O3). Ferrous iron in solution is readily converted to ferric iron by exposure to oxygen. Filtraton removes ferric iron, which is also known as precipitated iron. It cannot be removed by ion exchange.
