Concentration polarization

« Back to Glossary Index

The formation of a more concentrated gradient of rejected material near the surface of the membrane (in the boundary layer) causing either increased resistance to solvent transport or an increase in local osmotic pressure and possibly a change in rejection characteristics of the membrane (i.e., the salt concentration in the membrane boundary to the salt concentration in the bulk stream).
