Carbon dioxide

« Back to Glossary Index

Water with a low pH value usually contains free carbon dioxide, generally caused by absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air as water falls as rain, or by decay of organic matter in the earth. Well water containing substantial quantities of CO2 has a resultant low pH and corrosive qualities. Carbon dioxide in water forms a weak carbonic acid.
