Bacteria

« Back to Glossary Index

Microscopically small single-cell organisms that reproduce by fission of spores (cell division). Although usually classed as plants, bacteria contain no chlorophyll. Many different types of bacterial organisms are often found in drinking water. (Singular: bacterium.) Some of these microscopic living organisms can aid in pollution control by consuming or breaking down organic matter in sewage, or by similarly acting on oil spills or other water pollutants. Bacteria in soil, water or air can also cause human, animal and plant health problems.
