Advanced oxidation process

« Back to Glossary Index

An advanced chemical oxidation process is one of several combination oxidation processes that use (chemical) oxidants to reduce COD/BOD levels and remove organic and oxidizable inorganic components. The processes can completely oxidize organic materials to carbon dioxide and water, although it is rarely necessary to do so. Other combination oxidation processes include chemical oxidation process, which can use hydrogen peroxide, ozone, a combination of ozone and peroxide, hypochlorite, Fenton’s reagent, etc.; ultraviolet (UV) enhanced oxidation such as UV/ ozone, UV/hydrogen, UV/air; and wet air and/or catalytic wet air oxidation (where air is used as the oxidant).
