Europe: Zenith: bottled water consumption increasing

Last year’s hot summer boosted UK water drinks consumption by more than seven percent to 4,267 million liters (1.1 billion gallons), according to a new report from food and drink experts Zenith Global. Sales of plain bottled water in retail packs increased by 7.9 percent to 3.4 billion liters (0.8 billion gallons), while sales of flavored, functional and juicy waters rose by 7.2 percent. Zenith Global predicted that the UK market will continue to grow robustly, but at a slower pace than in recent years.

Latin America: Rating system launched

The International Water Association and the Inter-American Development Bank have launched jointly the digital AquaRating Community of Practice for water professionals at a water utilities workshop in Quito, Ecuador. This digital platform aims to promote improvement of water and sanitation services through exchange of knowledge, experiences and good practices among its members. The system is especially designed for professionals who work to improve the performance of water utilities through the AquaRating method: a pioneering system of comprehensive performance evaluation of water and sanitation service providers. This method allows them to identify improvement opportunities to offer quality services, ensure coverage and operate more efficiently.

April is Earth Month and the Wyland Foundation announces their national water conservation challenge for mayors. The Wyland Foundation urges mayors to look back at environmental disasters, what causes these them and what new challenges on the horizon can be prevented. In eight years, the Wyland challenge has grown from a small grass-roots challenge between mayors in south Florida to an annual nationwide sustainability campaign. A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co., Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Co. and Liberty Pump were all honored with WinSupply 2018 Vendor awards. Winners in each category were chosen based on several criteria, including being a leader in growing the segment’s business over the past year. They were also judged on selling to a breadth of locations that buy the vendor’s product, providing strong support at the local level and consistent volume and growth. In addition, Winsupply announced the opening of four new locations: two in Texas and one each in Maryland and Ohio.

North America: BASF units acquired by Solenis

Following the approval of all relevant authorities, BASF and Solenis have completed the previously announced merger of BASF’s wet-end Paper and Water Chemicals business with Solenis. With pro forma sales of approximately $3 billion (USD), the combined company will operate under the Solenis brand and is positioned to provide expanded chemical offerings and cost-effective solutions for customers. The new Solenis has approximately 5,200 employees, with increased sales, service and production capabilities across the globe.

North America: AWWA whiteboard animation helps protect against lead

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has released an animated whiteboard explainer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqFHrae92OM&feature=youtu.be) that helps consumers understand how to protect their households from the risk of lead in drinking water. The three-minute animation advises consumers to work with a plumber to identify sources of lead and whenever possible, to “get the lead out.” Some older homes have lead service lines or plumbing fixtures, fittings and solder that contain lead.

North America: ASSE-certified products accepted in Missouri

ASSE International announced that Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources now accepts ASSE-certified backflow protection products. As a result, ASSE manufacturing clients that list their backflow prevention products with ASSE are now able to market and sell their assemblies for installation in the state of Missouri. Effective February 28, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources adopted language allowing models of double-check valve assemblies (DC) and reduced-pressure principle backflow prevention assemblies (RPZ) that have been certified by ASSE.

North America: Rebates announced for water-leak products

To stem the tide of household leaks and help boost water conservation in the community, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) announced it will offer rebates to residents who purchase devices that can detect leaks and monitor their household water use. The launch of the Smart Leak Detector Program coincided with the annual observance of Fix a Leak Week, March 18-24, presented locally by the SNWA in conjunction with US EPA’s WaterSense program.

North America: NSF certification for Voltea announced

Voltea has received NSF/ANSI 42 certification and listing for its DiUse© and DiEntry© water treatment systems. This will make it possible for the company to sell these units for potable drinking-water purification in residences, restaurants, hotels, cafes and all drinking-water applications.
