North America: Dow name change announced

Dow Microbial Control officially changed its name to DuPont Microbial Control, marking the alignment with the DuPont brand and the successful separation of the Dow company from DowDuPont. DuPont Microbial Control represents the combined power of Dow’s pioneering history of developing products that control the growth of harmful microorganisms, now enhanced by DuPont’s world-leading position in the biotechnology space.

North America: Maine PFAS testing requirement instituted

In March, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced in a memorandum to licensed facilities that land apply, compost or process biosolids (i.e., wastewater treatment sludge) that it will require the testing of that material for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, PFBS and many other compounds. Given that these compounds are ubiquitous (and that land application of biosolids or composted biosolids as a soil amendment has been a common and long-standing practice in Maine and elsewhere), the aggressive new testing requirement is likely to have far-reaching effects.

North America: New name for NSPF

With the combined resources of the trade association and foundation, PHTA is poised to maximize its investments and talents for the greater good. North America: Manganese standard announced

The Water Quality Association has produced a standard that for the first time will allow manufacturers to test and certify their products for health-based manganese removal claims. The association collaborated with Health Canada and the Standards Council of Canada to write the standard in preparation for Health Canada’s issuance of a new health-based maximum allowable concentration (MAC) for manganese that will apply to drinking water supplies in Canada. WQA ORD1901 will avert an implementation gap with POU/POE systems needed for compliance to the proposed Canada MAC for manganese. In addition, the new standard will help companies address growing concerns about manganese in the US and other countries.

De Nora announced the acquisition of a majority interest in Neptune Enterprises, LLC, forming De Nora Neptune, LLC. A Texas-based water service company, De Nora Neptune has specialized in ‘on-the-fly’ fracking water treatment and cost-effective-produced water recycling in the unconventional oil and gas industry since 2012.

Asia: Toray venture announced

Toray Industries, Inc., ORIX Corporation and China Water Affairs Group Ltd. announced they will establish a joint-venture corporation to manufacture and sell drinking-water treatment facilities in China. The three entities formed a strategic partnership in June 2018 with the aim of working together in a wide range of water business activities in China. Through the establishment of the joint venture as one of the partnership’s concrete initiatives, it will incorporate Toray’s membrane filtration technologies to manufacture and sell drinking-water treatment facilities capable of supplying water that is suitable for drinking straight from the tap.

Asia: IAPMO India lab opened

IAPMO India celebrated the opening of its new testing laboratory and office in Bengaluru, India during an invitation-only ceremony on February 26. The opening signaled IAPMO India’s expansion of the recently acquired Aquadiagnostics’ testing capabilities to include plumbing products testing, in line with the IAPMO Group’s other laboratories in key markets worldwide. The testing laboratory will offer testing for products to the 2017 Water Efficiency Products-India (WEP-I) standard published by IAPMO India; the upcoming 2019 Energy Efficient Products-India (EEP-I), which was scheduled to be released in February; ASME A112.18.1 and A112.18.2 as well as NSF/ANSI 61 and 372.

Europe: Grundfos 2018 results announced

In 2018, net turnover in Grundfos increased by the highest level ever, with an organic sales growth of 6.6 percent. Sales increased in important markets including China, the US and western Europe. Furthermore, the global service business contributed significantly to reaching the highest organic growth rate since the end of the financial crisis almost 10 years ago.
